Jan Hutchinson Sets NCAA D-II Softball Coaching Record
WILMINGTON, DE--Bloomsburg University softball coach Jan Hutchinson became the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career softball wins on Saturday after her team took two games from Goldey-Beacom College by scores of 7-0 and 10-1.
The wins give Hutchinson 1,012 softball victories in her 29-year career, surpassing the mark set by former Augustana College coach Sandy Jerstad.
The Huskies got Hutchinson the record-tying win in game one by a 7-0 score. Pitcher Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) tossed a four-hit shutout, while striking out 11 and walking just one. Reed also paced the offensive attack going 3-4 with an RBI with Jess Rosin (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) adding a two-run double in a three-run first inning. Jennifer Davis (Center Valley/St. Patricks-St. Vincents) went 2-2 and Tiff Corliss (Lewisburg/Mifflinburg) was 2-4 for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg got the record-tying win in game two by a 10-1 score. Sheelin Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) went the distance and allowed just six hits. Offensively, Tara Emery (Sunbury/Shikellamy) was 2-4 with an RBI, while Courtney Rhone (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) was 2-2. Stacey Krupiewski (Trooper/Methacton) also had a run-scoring triple for the Huskies.
For Hutchinson is another milestone in a long line of awards and accomplishments.
"I never really thought about the record going into today's games," said Hutchinson, who is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. "We just wanted to get the wins after having a rough start to our season. It was certainly a nice way to end a long trip, though."
"I've also been lucky to have lots of great players and dedicated assistants, including Susan Kocher for the last 19 years," Hutchinson continued. "This record is as much theirs as it is mine."
As for passing Jerstad on the all-time win list, Hutchinson noted some of the many battles the Huskies had with the former coach.
"We played her teams many times over the years (going 10-10 in those games), including 1991 when we lost in the NCAA title game to Augustana," said Hutchinson. "I had a lot of respect for her and her program."
Following the game, the members of the Huskies were prepared to give Hutchinson the obligatory Gatorade bath, but surprised the coach.
"I really thought was I going to get dumped on, which would not have been fun on a cold day," said Hutchinson. "But instead the players faked me out with an empty container. Needless to say I was very happy to see it that there was nothing in it."
Hutchinson is also the NCAA all-time leader in all divisions in field hockey wins with 501 giving 1,513 career wins between the two sports. She has also won 12 NCAA field hockey national championships and one AIAW softball title.
The Huskies, 9-6, play at Holy Family College on March 23rd.
